cold weather running-& the age old question of what to wear

1. You won’t need as much as you think you will.
[this is from an american & temps are in fahrenheit]

My rule now is shorts with short sleeve tech shirt down to 45 degrees and shorts plus long sleeve tech from 45 to 32. Anything below freezing calls for long thermals, shorts, and jacket with gloves (awesome running beanie, optional). As I mentioned earlier, I found out rather quickly that running will heat the body up relatively quickly and more often than not, you’ll regret that big puffy coat. Lower body stuff like leggings and tights aren’t as suffocating, so feel free to experiment, but err on the side of minimalist up top.

2. That awful lung burn thing after your first few cold runs? Don’t worry; it goes away.
I can't tell you how many times I tried to "become a runner" in the winter months and got discouraged because of that awful burning sensation when I breathed; there is nothing worse than only being able to inhale half a breath out of fear of popping a lung. But don’t worry; you’ll get through it. It just takes a couple of runs to get your respiratory system adept to dealing with frosty air.

3. Nine of 10 scientists agree: runners look 50 percent cooler when wearing black gloves.
OK, maybe not. But there’s no doubt about it; running in the winter is so great because it brings out so many fashion choices. First off, the aforementioned gloves. There's just something about them. You feel faster when wearing them; you feel professional. Next there is the headgear. Women have the trendy headbands and earmuffs and guys have the wintertime beanies. But, again, be your own fashionista. Try new things and mix it up a little bit. Whatever you do, though, don't be the guy running with his shirt off when it's below freezing. People aren't staring because they think you're really awesome... Trust me.

4. Hydration is still important.
Yes, you obviously need more water in the summer months when you are sweating up a storm, but don’t think that just because it is cold you don’t need to hydrate. Ice cold water might be the last thing you want when the temps are low, but just be sure not to skip the water completely. Be smart and be healthy. Bonus: If you get snow where you are, you have all the water you need; just stop and eat some of the white stuff and go on your way.

Other than that, just get out there and do it. You’re going to be faster, and you’re going to learn to love it. It might be tough at first, but I guarantee people will envy your willpower when they see you braving the brutal conditions as they pass in their van with the heater at full blast. Anyone can run in the spring, summer, and fall; it takes a true champ to face mother nature in the dead of winter.

CALLING ALL ‘FIELD OF DREAMS’ RUNNERS

The race is on to sign up for a one-off charity road race for Deafblind Scotland next weekend.

Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities can take part in the charity’s ‘Field of Dreams’ 10k, 5k and 1k races on Sunday 22 August.

Competitors’ registration fees will raise funds towards creating a new £1.4 million ‘Field of Dreams’ training and resource centre for deafblind people in Scotland.

Organised by Lenzie-based charity Deafblind Scotland, in partnership with local regeneration organisation Kirkintilloch’s Initiative (KI), the event is being held on the new Kirkintilloch link road, which will connect Kirkintilloch and Lenzie to the national motorway system, before it officially opens.

The first 1000 runners to finish will receive a special ‘Field of Dreams’ medal. Family entertainment will include a running commentary, music, snacks and bouncy castles for the younger kids.

Drena O’Malley, Deafblind Scotland’s Resources Manager, said: “This is a unique event on a wonderful piece of road engineering which takes in suburbia, peat bog and wetlands in less than four kilometres and ends at a motorway roundabout.

“This will be a great opportunity for experienced runners from all over central Scotland to get their heads down and go for it on a rolling course with no cars, no obstructions, and great views.

“It will also be a great family day out and I’d encourage local residents, running and walking enthusiasts, families and businesses to come along to support this good cause. Together we can turn our dream into reality.”

After the race events are completed, small groups will have the chance to walk along part of the new road to view the Link Road features and the proposed ‘Field of Dreams’ site, where the charity hopes to build its new 7000sq ft centre.

The ‘Field of Dreams’ 5k starts at 9.30am and the 10k at 10.30am. Both events finish in Woodhead Park where the special 1k Fun Run for children of 12 years and under takes place at 10.45am.

Entry fees are £15 for the 10k, £10 for the 5k and £2 for children’s 1k Fun Run.

To enter the race or to make a donation, visit www.deafblindscotland.org.uk

People can also enter on the day.

hit the ground running

the trip was a trip, & we arrived after 24 hours of travelling & grabbed a couple of hours of shut-eye & went off to meet all these people we had corresponded with over the last 2 or 3 months.
the race was pretty well organised & started on time. it seemed to have a different route than i expected ,however we ran along the side of a river bed so it was pretty flat. drink stations regularly & gu [gels] every so often. at the turn there was beer[although at 945 in the morning i fel it was a bit early]
13.1 miles passed in quite a long but ultimately comfortable flash, with no real upsets. the announcers shouted out our names as we entered the stadium with a little help from one of the other runners who pointed out that we had just arrived that day from scotland-a great feeling.
brilliant crowds & a great party afterwards completed an amazing 1st day in the states. no real signs of jet lag either.
just need to get out for a run today or tomorrow before i've eaten so much that i'll be unable to do it....
having a fab time so far!
